Artist's Comments

Dairy farmer Paul Griffith pictured with some of his herd on Greendown Farm, outside Okehampton, Devon. Paul is one of many farmers whose cattle has been affected by tuberculosis in the past, spread by badgers. The government has decided against a cull, leaving many who work in the industry questioning how they will cope.

I'm still learning...

I love how the cows have helped you out, angling in towards the gentleman, hence helping (with the vignetting) to focus the photo onto him.

Those cows look simultaneously adorable and imposing. It's a great shot, showing the farmer WITH his herd, rather than just treating the animals as a commodity.

I'm about to do the photojournalistic equivalent of commenting about a model's weight to a glamour photographer, but if they won't allow a badger cull, can't cows be vaccinated against TB? Maybe you don't know, I'm just curious.

I have to say, the way nearly all of the cows are looking directly at the camera makes the picture for me.
:iconviewtiful0:
I wasn't listening, but I'm fairly sure I overheard on the news that a farmer could not vaccinate his cattle. Whether this is due to the practical or financial implications or even if it is to do with keeping the cattle 'organic', I'm not sure.
:iconrockstarvanity:
I suppose it might have something to do with people eating the meat or drinking the milk from a cow that had chemicals pumped into it. I hadn't thought of that.

Well, all of that 'chemical' stuff seems a bit stupid to me :|. Especially as all a vacciene would need is a weakened colony of the TB bacteria. However, this is just speculation it may not be at all why the cattle cannot be vaccinated.
